Smith Machine
The
Marcy Smith Machine is an all in one solution that's a very
entry level unit sold at most Costco stores nationwide.
The
list of features on the Marcy smith is impressive at first
glance as it has a lot of what you want in a smith machine
such as a 7 degree carriage, self spotting safety catches
on the front and a bench with leg developer.
The
problem is, none of the equipment is up to par with good
quality machines, it's simply too hard to have this many
features without sacrificing on most points and cutting
some corners...
Marcy
Smith Machine Key Features and Specs:
- "Ultra-Guide"
bushings (not superior linear bearings)
- Adjustable
bar catches and safety stoppers
- 6
Olympic plate storage pegs
- Includes
lat bar, triceps rope, shiver bar, ankle strap, single
handle and chromed V-bar
- multi-function
bench included with preacher pad and Olympic sleeve
For
starters, the bench on the Marcy is not what you'd call
club quality, and there is no adjustment in the leg developer
so it probably won't fit most people who use it.
The
bushings on the smith carriage system also leave something
to be desired. Once you try a smith machine with linear
bearings (like my Parabody), you just won't be satisfied
with a bushing glide system as they aren't very smooth and
have a tendency to bind.
My
biggest gripe with the Marcy Smith Machine is that there
are a limited number of catches for the weight carriage
as there are only 8 latch points which limits the advantage
of using a smith machine for safety, and also is a disadvantage
when lifting free weights as you probably won't be able
to find the right lift off point for your lifts.
