Nautilus Smith Machine

Yet another of the budget smith machines typically carried by Costco and comparable in pric to the Marcy Smith Machine and Freemotion r31 Smith Machine in performance and features.

Nautilus decided to outfit this machine with (2) adjustable pulleys to do chest exercises and various arm exercises with and although you won't find this option on many other smith machines (except the Hoist), the functional operation of the pulleys is more for show than for use.

The biggest problem with the pulley system is that they are too close together to be of much good for doing chest exercises, and only marginally effective for anything else...

Marcy Smith Machine Key Features and Specs:

  • "Ultra-Guide" bushings (not superior linear bearings)
  • Adjustable bar catches and safety stoppers
  • 6 Olympic plate storage pegs
  • Includes lat bar, triceps rope, shiver bar, ankle strap, single handle and chromed V-bar
  • multi-function bench included with preacher pad and Olympic sleeve

Unfortunately my criticism of the Nautilus Smith machine doesn't stop with the pully system, as I feel there are (3) other major problems with this machine that make it a deal killer for sure.

The first problem is the smith carriage system that, once again, uses bushings instead of linear bearings. If you want to be constantly greasing the poles, and have them bind up on you, by all means get one - but don't call me in two months when the thing doesn' work like it should.

Second, since Nautilus decided to use the adjustable pullys, they completely left out a lat tower option! I wouldn't even consider getting a smith machine without lat attachment as you can't do pulldowns, low rows or any number of arm exercises like tricep pushdowns.

And third, there are no gun racks or free weight options for performing any type of lift off the front of the machine, you're stuck using the smith portion for every exercise, and that's not something I'd be willing to live with for any amount of money...
